Once this prototype was up and running, it ran almost all summer unattended. It always was intended to be an autonomous system but it never performed that way in the past. The data acquired from this summer was a spectacular success. The prototype ran nearly flawlessly and the data confirmed many assumptions and design parameters.

Towards the end of August, our management felt it was time to pull the plug on the field trial. We were told that after August to let the system run until it died on its own. If we couldn't get it going again with local help, we were told not to travel to fix it. The Friday before the end of August, a lightning strike at the station totally took out virtually every piece of gear in our set up. We made the bold decision that since August wasn't over yet, we had the freedom to go down and affect repairs. We quickly got flights to GA and headed to the station to assess the damage.

As I said virtually every piece of gear on the tower and at the command station was fried. We were prepared for this because virtually every piece of gear had a replacement part on site ready for action. We replaced both computers, their communications modem, the GPIB extenders on the tower and ground, and other items that I can't remember now. The only item that did not have an immediate replacement part was the UART chip on our custom designed communications link. The UART chip was (I think) a military grade component that fortunately was socketed on its circuit board. Bob drove to the local Radio Shack (where once again he had fun needling the kid working the store) and purchased an off the shelf device that once plugged into the circuit board, worked perfectly.

All the repairs we completed before Monday morning, we got the prototype kick started and running again, and we flew home before any of the managers knew what happened. Sometimes, the old axiom needs to be tested, "It is better to seek forgiveness than ask permission.".

Although the centralized wet mill has been operating during this year's harvest, Cenfrocafe has not finished building and outfitting the facility. As you might have presumed from the sample roaster pictured, the co-op has already made the necessary arrangements and purchased equipment for a small, on-site cupping lab.
